What is Reiki?

The word “Reiki” comes from two Sanskrit words: Rei, meaning “universal” and ki, (sometimes spelled "chi") meaning “life force”. Reiki is the process of allowing this life force energy to pass through the practitioner’s hands to the client for the purpose of restoring health, relaxation, and well-being. This takes place during a Reiki session, which I offer at Wellspring.

How does Reiki work?

We are alive because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body through pathways called chakras and meridians. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Lifeforce nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. With the disruption of life force flow, diminished function in organs and tissues of the physical body occurs.

The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.

Reiki restores health by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings reside. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. Reiki clears, strengthens, and restores health to the energy pathways, therefore allowing the life force to flow in its natural way.

Where does Reiki energy come from?

Energy comes through the practitioner in a Reiki session from the Divine Source. It is never depleted. In fact, the process of giving a Reiki healing session is restorative to both the person receiving the energy as well as the practitioner! This important distinction sets Reiki apart from most other energy work. I could give Reiki all day and feel better than when I started!

What does a Reiki session feel like?

Different people experience a Reiki session in different ways. Even for one person, two Reiki sessions can feel very different from each other. The sensations may also vary with different Reiki practitioners.

The most common sensations for the person receiving the energy are warmth or coolness, tingling, pulsing, sleepiness, and daydreaming. Some people drift on the edge of sleep during a session. Certainly, taking a nap as soon as possible after a session is one of the best ways to integrate the healing energy into the body.

What can I expect during a Reiki session?

I will ask you to remove your shoes and loosen any tight clothing so that you can lie comfortably on the table. If you are cold, ask for a blanket. Pillows are usually placed under your head and knees. If lying on your back is uncomfortable, we can work in another position that feels right to you. I will work by placing hands either directly on to your body or in the space directly over your body. Please let me know at the beginning of the session if you do not wish to be touched directly.

As the energy begins to flow, you may find your mind drifting to subjects and memories that seem unrelated. This is your own healing system working with the Reiki energy. It is pointing out damaged areas in your life experience. If you wish to talk about what you are experiencing, you may do so, as some people find this to be a beneficial part of the healing process. I maintain strict confidentiality around all sessions. At the end of the Reiki session, I will remind you to move slowly as you stand up, as you may be a little light-headed. It is wise to give your body a chance to rest. I recommend a short nap, followed by drinking plenty of water to assist the body’s detoxification process.

How can Reiki help with my decluttering process?

Our connection with the things we have accumulated is an energetic one. Often, we fill empty places in our lives with things in order to ease the emptiness. But each item that we allow space in our homes requires energy from us. This is why people describe their cluttered homes as “draining” or “overwhelming.”

Through the use of Reiki, the energetic ties between our personal energy and the things around us are examined. Once we have a more objective view of these ties, it is easier to gently release them. Reiki unbinds the ties to clutter that are weighted with guilt, sorrow or other negative emotions. It is a central part of my Sacred Living Space Clearing Service.

I can’t get to you for a Reiki session. Can you help me?

I offer long-distance Reiki sessions conducted via Skype. At your appointment time, find a relaxing place to sit. Take a few minutes before the call to slow down. The device you are using for Skype should not rest directly on your body during the Reiki session. Minimizing distractions brings the best results.
