Career Success-10 Ways to Make Your Front Door a Magnet

front door, front yard, career, success

With a meandering path, this front door welcomes guests and new possibilities.

Your front door is more than a way in and out of your home – it is the energetic pathway for all new things to enter your home, career, and your life. It is the first thing that your guests experience when arriving for a visit. It is also the last thing they see when they leave (hopefully after a fun and fabulous visit with you!).

But many of us pay very little attention to our front door. If you are like me, I drive into the garage and enter my home through the door in the back. Some people park their cars in a driveway at the side of the house, always entering the kitchen through the back door (this was the house where I grew up). Aside from hanging a wreath on it at Christmas and opening it for guests, many of us have very little experience with our own front door.

In traditional feng shui, if the front door is more or less in the center of that side of your house, then it is situated in the “Career” area of the bagua, or feng shui map. What this means in traditional feng shui is that this part of your house is the place where life energy enters and the first place it does its work is in the area of career.

I am NOT a feng shui traditionalist, but I can say that my study of the subject has helped me to understand some of the psychological roots of the traditions. Since our homes are an extension of our selves, it makes sense to me that our Career energy would be toward the front of our home. We leave our homes to go to work, and so, we put on our face to meet the world. Therefore, if you decide that this part of your home could represent your intentions to move ahead in your job, get a raise, or find a new career, then it is about to become a powerful tool for helping you to achieve those goals.

So, let’s go on a little field trip!

Go out whatever door you usually use, and walk down your street until your house is out of sight. It is important to do this exercise on foot, as you will see things differently without glass between you and the scenery. Turn around and slowly walk toward your home. Imagine that you are visiting your home for the first time and try to see it with the eyes of a welcome guest. What do you notice first about your property? Is it easy to find your front door? What do you like and dislike about the area?

Obscured with bushes and overgrown ivy, this front door is not optimized for energy flow.

When doing this exercise, some people are surprised to find that it is actually quite difficult to figure out how to get to the front door. Without a clear path, or with lots of overgrown bushes obscuring the door, the process of welcoming guests or positive energy becomes blocked as well! Pay close attention to how you feel as you approach your front door. Do you feel welcomed? Confused?

Stand in front of the door, and actually knock or ring the doorbell. Do you feel like it is a safe place to stand while waiting for someone to answer the door? Are there old, rain-soaked newspapers or leaflets littering the area? Does this waiting area make you feel excited to go in or apprehensive about what might await you inside?

As you open the front door, notice how well the door functions. Does it open easily or is it sticky or squeaky? Is there plenty of room inside the entryway for it to open the full width of the door or are there items blocking it? Have you set aside a space for hospitality – a mat or rug at the door, a place to set down a purse or keys, a place to sit and remove shoes (if desired)?

Now that you have just experienced a little of what it might be like for a guest to visit your home and enter your front door, let’s talk about some things we can do to invite the energy (and our friends) into our home a little more smoothly.

10 Tips to Magnetize your Front Door for Career Success

This door needs a little updating and a trim of the ivy around it.

#1. Delineate a path to the door. First of all, make sure that the path is smooth and free of debris or trip hazards. The best paths gently meander. Soften the edges of a straight brick or cement walkway with a few plants in pots or in the ground.

#2. The door should be clearly visible. Are the bushes overgrown and obscuring the door? Therefore, it’s time for a trim! If your door can’t be seen easily, chances are you have been overlooked in your career lately as well.

#3. Keep the area around the door clean and attractive. If there is an old welcome mat there from 1987, it’s probably time for a new one. Get rid of any old newspapers that are littering your stoop. Sweep the area clean and rinse the dust away with a hose. Pitch out any dead or dying plants and replace with something that needs to be watered regularly. Above all, keep these plant alive and healthy!

#4. Ensure that the door is in good working order. Another thing to consider is the actual function of the door. Tighten the screws and oil the hinges. If the door sticks, you can repair it. Learn how here.

#5. Wash the insides and outsides of all windows on and around the door. Clean up any cobwebs and use your hose to wash the dust off the siding.

#6. Consider painting the door a contrasting color. Traditional feng shui prefers red doors, but I’d say that anything that makes your home feel welcoming and attractive can work for you. If painting seems like too large a task, how about a new door-knocker or handle? Even cleaning up the existing hardware can really make your door look great. Make that door look great! As a result, career opportunity will soon be knocking!

#7. Create a “landing area” inside the door. Because this is a liminal space, the entryway allows your guests to make a gentle transition into the private space of your home. Make sure that your floor area is clear so that your door can open the full width of the door to let energy and people in easily. Another thing to consider is your coat closet. Do you have enough space and hangers for your guests’ coats?

#8. Meticulously manage clutter in this space. Trash that junk mail before it enters the rest of your home!  A trash can by the front door shoots that garbage straight to the recycling bin. Keys, purses, and umbrellas all need places to be stored for you and for guests. Maybe you prefer a shoeless home. Provide a comfortable place to sit and a place to store shoes.

#9. Turn your outside lights on and walk up to the door at night. Is it easy to see your house number? How about the front door? Can you find the doorbell? Does the path need additional lighting for safety? There are so many really great solar options available. As a result, many of them require zero skill for installation – just some soft ground.

#10. Finally, envision yourself walking up to your front door with that promotion you’ve been wanting. Imagine how good it will feel to invite your new boss to dinner. FEEL how wonderful it is to have the new career RIGHT NOW as you water the new plants. Consequently, this is the key – powerful, manifesting thoughts linked with your positive action to improve your space. You are well on your way to taking your career from dreams into reality.
