Divine Writing: A Two-Way Conversation
In my article, “Divine Communication: Not Just for Mystics and Crazies”, I talk about my life path that led to my soul-altering practice of Divine Writing to my Creator. This is a two-way conversation that daily amazes me with the insight, depth, and compassion expressed by my Creator.
Since I published that article, I have had messages, emails, and conversations with many people on the subject. Most of the conversations began with some assumption that there must be something special about me to make this connection happen.
Although I am a lovely and unique human being, there is nothing special about my ability to talk with the Divine.
8 Simple Steps to Connect with your Creator through Divine Writing
Step #1 – Acknowledge that there is a Divine Presence.
What exactly does this mean? I’m going to be wholly honest with you here. I was raised Roman Catholic, and I have pretty much rejected what I was taught about “God” in my religious upbringing. Religion has very little to do with this process, actually.
The only part of my early religious experiences that I have held onto is that there most definitely IS a Divine Presence.
When I was a very little girl, I thought that our parish priest was God. Once I learned that I was mistaken, my image of God became amorphous and downright vague. It was hard for me to draw a line between what I was learning at church and what I felt when I was in the woods or listening to music.
Consequently, as I got older, I explored other images of the Divine. The thing that they all had in common was that they were wholly outside of my own self. “God” still was a faraway concept that I was chasing.
Step #2 – Accept that the Divine is fully present with and within us
As I embraced my calling as an energetic healer, I began to experience the Divine in the healing energy I channeled. This felt far more tangible and felt in line with my ecstatic experiences as a musician and in nature.
When I joined the Episcopal Church with its vast umbrella of acceptance of a wide array of understandings of the Divine, I was welcomed fully. I started reassessing theological concepts from my youth, looking at scripture and sacrament in a whole new light.
Therefore, with this broader understanding, I began to grasp that the Divine Presence is not just with us, it is within us. This cosmic creative energy of the Universe meets us in the physical at a soul level. Eucharist became a reminder that my Creator already dwells within me.
If your concept of spirituality is not associated with any religion, I think it may be a shorter step towards the Divine Within. Without the complicated baggage that took me years to process and release, embracing the Universal Power within yourself could be as simple as generating a consciousness built upon unconditional self-love.
With this knowledge comes real power: Isolation is an illusion. We are infinitely worthy. We are loved and worth loving.
Step #3 – Raise your personal vibration
While it is certainly possible to access your inner Divine Presence when you are in a negative emotional place, it is far easier when your personal vibration is high. So, what exactly do I mean by “personal vibration”?
We are primarily energetic beings having a physical experience. Our primary energy signature is that of our emotional state. Therefore, our emotions play the pivotal role in how our physical body moves through this physical world.
For instance, have you ever been with a group of people, having a good time, when a new person enters the room (in a very bad mood) and it feels like someone dimmed the lights? What you are feeling is the way the person’s emotional energy changes the dynamic of the room.
Your personal vibration reflects how you are feeling emotionally. When we are feeling joyful, grateful, in the flow of life, our vibration is high. When we are depressed, anxious, or angry, our vibration is lower. Making choices about your “emotional hygiene” that keep you in that better feeling state also have health benefits for your physical body like lowered stress hormones, lower blood pressure, and overall relaxation.
So, how can we get to a better vibration, especially if we are feeling less than fabulous?
One of the best tools to make the shift quickly is gratitude. Find something small for which you are grateful and let it lead you to another thing. Finally, make a conscious choice to feel better, knowing that you do indeed have the power to direct your thoughts and emotions in any way you wish.
Other great tools to help you make the shift include:
- Uplifting music
- A walk outside in nature
- Inspirational reading
- Talking with a friend who can uplift you
- Exercise
- Guided meditations (try this one)
Step #5 – Gather your Divine Writing tools and set the Vibrational Tone
The first thing I would suggest is absolute privacy. Create an environment where you will not be disturbed. Turn off your phone and eliminate any other distractions. Light a candle, if you wish.
Even though I have been doing Divine Writing with my Creator for some time, I still cannot do it when my wife is around. It’s best if she’s not even home. At first, Divine Writing felt very silly – my self-consciousness made it nearly impossible to get my vibration high enough. With practice, I feel a lot less silly, but I still require privacy to hear what the Divine has to say to me.
I’m going to suggest three different ways to find the Divine Writing method that works best for you. Above all, approach the process with curiosity and a desire to experiment! Imagine that you are tinkering with an old radio receiver to best pick up the signal intended just for you.
- Paper and pen method – Get a new notebook and a pen that you really like to use. Some people like to switch pen colors when the Divine is ready to come through. Others find that this disrupts the flow.
- Keyboard method – I use a journaling app on my iPad called Chronicle. Hit return twice to leave space between your words and Divine communication.
- Recorder method – For those of you who don’t enjoy writing, this is for you. Use the recorder feature on your phone or laptop. Use transcription software to transcribe the recordings when you are finished. Make sure to take at least two deep breaths between your words and the words of your Creator.
Step #6 – Make the Invitation to Your Creator
I described the first time I tried Divine Writing in the article I mentioned above. Nervous, I was afraid that it wouldn’t work. I was terrified of what it might mean for me if it did. Here’s an excerpt from my first conversation:
Me: “I’m finding this sort of meditation very helpful, but I find myself wondering if it’s all just my imagination.”
Creator: “Of course it is. Where do you think I live inside you? I live in that Source place where ideas and inspiration begin. This is a creative exercise, and I am here with you because you specifically asked me to be wholly present. I’d be present, even if you didn’t ask, but not as perceptibly.”
Me: “Why is this so much easier to do in writing? I feel like I kind of suck at prayer.”
Creator: “Because writing, for you, is a recognized creative outlet. As soon as you start writing, you have given yourself permission to be creative. And with that permission comes the possibility of our closer interaction.”
Be honest. Write it out. Ask for help. Lay your fears on the table and make the invitation. Don’t second guess yourself if you feel the urge to start typing or writing (or speaking) in answer to yourself. Go with it. Trust it. No one will ever see this but you. It is intended for your eyes only.
Step #7 – Verify the Divine Writing Source
I was talking to a close friend of mine about my experiences with Divine Writing. He asked me, “How do you know that the stuff you are writing is really from God?”
He had a point – one that had been bothering me as well. Cheeky as it was, I decided to ask the Creator for proof. Here’s the litmus test to verify that what you receive is truly from Source:
- Does it feel like the truth? Be honest with yourself – the Divine is never going to push you further than you can go. The Divine wants you to be a joyous, healthy, abundant co-creator. When the Creator is talking, it always feels like truth.
- Does it feel like it belongs in your life? Again, trust your emotions. It may feel like a stretch, but chances are, you’ve considered the possibility in the past.
- Is it grounded in compassion and absolute love? The Divine ALWAYS speaks the truth with a tender love for us. Sometimes it is hard to hear, and Source knows that. When hard truths are delivered, they are ALWAYS given with a profound sense of compassion. The promise of continued support, whatever we decide to do, is made clear. The Divine never belittles, threatens, guilt trips, or even speaks with a cynical tone.
Step #8 – Remember the Motives of the Divine
One of the questions that I asked of my Creator was, “What do you want from us? How can we return the same joy to you that you desire for us?”
Here’s what I learned:
- The Creator desires to co-create with us. The Divine Presence wants to deeply share in all of the facets of our lives. We need to make that invitation to invite Source into that deeper connection.
- The Divine Presence wants to be in a relationship with us. Active relationship. Talking and listening. Sharing our sorrows and celebrating our joys. When we close ourselves off from Source, it is painful for us both.
I very much hope that this article can inspire you to experiment with the process of Divine Writing.
