Sacral Chakra: Tuning your Home for Relationships and Love

sacral chakra, svadhistana, love, relationships, wellspring energyworksThe sacral chakra is the energetic center of emotion, pleasure, and relationships. (For the definition of a chakra, click here.) It is generally located between the navel and the pubic bone. It is higher for those who identify as men, lower for those who identify as women. When the sacral chakra is healthy, there is balance in relationships.  Emotional honesty, a self-regulated pursuit of pleasure, and good sexual energy are also indicators of health.

When there are problems with the sacral chakra, physical issues include sexual dysfunction, fertility problems, herpes/genital warts, urinary issues, and low back pain. If the sacral chakra is out of balance, emotions may run to the extremes. Overindulgence in food, alcohol, drugs, and/or sex is common. When the chakra is weak, there may be a lack of interest in pleasurable things, especially sex.

The “Martyr Archetype”

In Ambika Wauters’ book, Chakras and their Archetypes: Uniting Energy Awareness and Spiritual Growth, she talks about one particular manifestation of a weakness in the sacral chakra – martyrdom. She describes a life built around the belief that the only correct path through life requires suffering and self-denial:

“[The Martyr] archetype feels helpless to do anything to change its situation. It stays enmeshed and involved in situations which deplete its well-being, and often suffers for the sake of others. It does not feel entitled to personal happiness and can suffer for years, unable to change its life patterns. The Martyr relinquishes its claim to happiness in order to maintain peace, stability, and balance for others. This can be at the detriment of its own mental and emotional health and physical well-being. Many times the Martyr feels it is doing the right thing for children, spouse or parents by living an incomplete and unfulfilled life and suffering at the expense of its own creativity and personal well-being. It feels the situation is hopeless or can’t be changed. It is tragic to watch the Martyr’s personal happiness drain away with every denial of true self. This can make it embittered and angry when those it sacrifices itself for leave or pass away.” [pg. 52]

Confronting the Martyr archetype (if it is at work in your life) can be one of the most difficult, yet potentially empowering acts to undertake. Daily exercises that focus on your sense of vitality, such as physically challenging activities are particularly helpful. Reinforcing your human right to receive pleasure from various sources is critical. Making time and space for activities that simply give you joy and pleasure is deeply healing to the sacral chakra.

Using Feng Shui to support the Sacral Chakra

Another way to provide support and healing to your sacral chakra is to work on the feng shui bagua area of the home associated with Love and Relationships. Standing at your front door, the Love and Relationships area is located in the far-right corner of the house.

Make sure area is well lit and clean. The color of the second chakra is usually orange, but the color for Love and Relationships is pink. If you are trying to boost the energy of the area, desiring a new partner or more energy in your current love life, lean toward pink. If you are aiming for general balance and continued good health, go for orange.

When you are single and wish to find a partner, keeping this area of the house free of clutter and well energized is critical. Heat up the area with candles, round mirrors, and fresh flowers. My hot tub is located in this area, and I’m blessed with a very loving, supportive spouse. Use items that symbolize the type of relationship that you seek. They will be particularly potent in this area.  Place items here in pairs – never just a single item.

This is not an area for pictures of your ex, paintings of sad, lonely ladies, or anything that brings you down. Plants are fine but avoid anything prickly or spiky (like cactus or aloe). If you have a bathroom in this area, keep the lid down on the toilet and close your drains when not in use. Keep the door closed to the bathroom, and make sure that clutter and dirt are not allowed to accumulate in this space!

Care for your Bedroom

Finally, wherever your bedroom is located, make sure that it is in harmony with the kind of love relationship you want in your life. If you are single and want a partner, make sure that your bed has two pillows. Use two nightstands and ensure free access to both sides of the bed. I can’t stress this point enough – if you don’t create the space for someone to come into your home (and your bed), the energy will not be right for them to come into your life.
